Friday, 1st November 1985 — a date that now marks a truly special milestone for two familiar faces at FJ Chalke.
Steve Fowler and Scott Young began their journeys with the company on the very same day, and this year they celebrate an incredible 40 years of service.
From apprentices to directors, both Steve and Scott have become an integral part of the FJ Chalke story — a story rooted in community, customer care, and an unwavering commitment to the motor trade.
Today, Steve Fowler serves as Managing Director, guiding the business through an ever-evolving automotive landscape, while Scott Young is Branch Director at Vale Motors in Wincanton, continuing to champion the friendly, family-run values that have shaped the dealership’s success for more than 90 years.
Reflecting on their journey, it’s clear just how much the industry has changed since those early days. “When we started, everything was handwritten — invoices, service records, even sales contracts,” laughs Steve. “Now we’ve got online showrooms, digital finance applications and cars that can park themselves! It’s been quite the transformation.”
Scott agrees: “The technology has changed beyond recognition, but what hasn’t changed is our approach to customers. Whether it’s a first-time buyer or someone who’s been coming to us for decades, that personal service is what sets us apart.”
Over the past four decades, Steve, Scott and the team have witnessed it all — from the rise of Japanese imports and the popularity of diesel in the 1990s, to today’s focus on electric and hybrid technology. Together, they’ve helped steer FJ Chalke through expansion, brand additions, and a rapidly modernising retail experience.
Chairman, George Chalke, who continues the family legacy, praised their commitment:

As the motor industry moves into an electrified future, both directors remain as enthusiastic as ever about what lies ahead. “It’s an exciting time,” says Steve. “We’ve gone from petrol to plug-in, and the pace of change is only speeding up.
