Why Does FJ Chalke Have a Dog Logo?

If you’ve ever visited FJ Chalke, you’ve probably noticed our dog emblem.

You’ll see it on our showroom signage, our number plates, our marketing — and now proudly displayed on the rear of our vehicles.

But why a dog?

The answer lies in our history, our hometown, and a symbol that has become part of our identity.

The Origin of the Talbot Dog

FJ Chalke was originally established by Frederick James Chalke in the village of Mere - Wiltshire.

Mere has long been associated with the Talbot Dog — a now-extinct Wiltshire hunting hound once known throughout the region. The Talbot became a recognised symbol of the town, appearing in local architecture and building names.

For many years, visitors to Mere would have known the former The Talbot Hotel (now The George Inn), named after the hound. At the entrance to Zeals House on the outskirts of town, a pair of Talbot dog statues still stand today — a quiet reminder of the town’s heritage.

Even our Mere showroom carries the name Talbot Garage.

How the FJ Chalke Dog Logo Was Created

In the 1990s, our owner David Chalke suggested adopting the Talbot Dog as our company logo — recognising its local significance and strong identity within the community.

From that idea, the FJ Chalke Talbot Dog silhouette was created.

What began as a tribute to our hometown has since become a symbol recognised across Wiltshire, Somerset and beyond.

Today, the FJ Chalke dog represents:
  • Heritage
  • Trust
  • Local pride
  • Longevity
  • Community connection

It tells people who we are, what we do, and what we stand for — even if they have never visited us before.

A Local Symbol That Travels

Over the years, our customers have grown to love the Talbot Dog. You’ll find it:

  • On our showroom signage
  • Across our marketing
  • On our number plates
  • And now — as a vehicle badge
Trusted Local Heritage

From its beginnings in Mere to becoming a trusted name across the South West, FJ Chalke has always believed in doing things properly.

The Talbot Dog isn’t just a logo.

It’s a symbol of where we started — and a mark of the standards we continue to uphold.

If you spot the dog on the road, you’ll know exactly where it came from.

We recently began applying a subtle 35mm silver Talbot Dog badge to the rear of our vehicles

Why?

Because every car we prepare represents our reputation. The badge is a mark of pride — a quiet sign that the vehicle was supplied and prepared by FJ Chalke.

Now, the Talbot Dog is travelling across Wiltshire, Somerset and further afield — seen on roads, driveways and car parks throughout the region.
